Summary/Contribute

Meaning The burner. One of the oldest most familiar names in English lake district. The as-burner was a manufacturer of charcoal, to be used for the bloomsmithies of the middle ages. It is probable that the as-burner's craft covered the rocess of smelting as well. The traves of ancient bloomeries are still to be found in the coppice woods that skirt the shores of Windermere, Coniston, and the Duddon estuary. Gradually the occupation term became 'collier,' and ouisted the other. The surname, Ashburner, however, will for ever remain a memorial of the primitive period when iron, whose trees supplied the fuel.
