Meaning The sumpter. Old French 'sommetier,' a pack-horseman, one who carried baggage on horseback; in modern English applied to the horse, not the driver, a sumpter-horse being really a sumpter's horse.
A variant of Sumpter. This corruption still occurs in the district where iit has existed at least four centuries. Several entries concerning the family of Sumpter are thus found in the Prestbury registers, East Cheshire.
