Meaning Local: Of Holbrook. A parish in county Suffolk, six miles from Ipswich; also a parish in county Derby, five miles from Derby. Both places seem to have given rise to a surname. Evidently there is a locality called Holbrook in the West country. Holbrook has ramified very strongly in the Puritan settlements of America. In 1635 Thomas Holbrook of Broudway, aged 34, with his wife, two sons, and a daughter, embarked for New England.
