Last Name GILES

Summary/Contribute

Meaning The son of Giles, a curious familiar for Egidius. It is very difficult to find a Giles in the 13th and 14th centuries registers, as it is all but invariably entered Egidius. Whether or no Giles was originally a contraction of Egidius, or a substitute for it, it is hard to say. The two seem to have nothing in common. As Gill was familiar to Julia, so Giles at first represented Julius. We must remember that exactly the same accident hasbefallen Jack as representing John, as it does in ENgland, yet, more correctly, James.
