Meaning The son of Dennis. Both Denis and Denise, masculine and feminie forms, were in common use. Crossing over from France, this font-name was for a while exceedingly popular, especially in Yorkshire and the North, and has left its mark in such familiar surnames as Dyson, Denny, Dennett, Dyatt, Dyett, and Dye, apart from this one. The fiminine Dennise lingered on in South-West England till the close of 18th century. Another possible source of the name is local, 'de Deneys,' i.e. the Danish.
