Meaning The cow-herd. It is almost extinct, but Coward is very strong represented in North-English directories. The form Cowherd, unmutilated, is preserved in William Cowherd, the founder of the sect of Cowgerdites, as they were familiarly styled. He was born at Carnforth, Lancashire, in 1763, the district where Coward is one of the best-known surnames.
