Meaning The son of Paganel or Paynel, a diminutive of Pagan or Pain. One of the chief tenants 'in capite' in Domesday is a Ralph Paganel. The corruptions are many but natural.
Ralph Pinel was a tenant 'in capite' in county Essex ans Suffolk at the date of Domesday. Two centuries later the surname was stillsettled there. It is probably a local name despite the absence of loca prefixes, and of Norman extraction.
