Meaning	Local: Of Montgomerie, near Lisieux, in Normandy. The family gave name to the shire and town of Montgomery in Wales. The name is of Norman origin. Roger de Montgomerie came into England with William the Conqueror; his son Philip de Montgomerie, who settled in Scotland, where he received a grant of the lands of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire and died in 1140, was the ancestor of the Scottish family of Montgomery. A corruption of the Latin "Mons Gomeris," Gomer's mount. 'Gomer,' the son of Japhet, the hereditary name of the Gauls.
