Meaning The name was originally Locard. The family are descended from Sir Simon Locard of Lee, in Lanarkshire, who, in 1329, accompanied Lord James Douglas with the heart of Robert Bruce to Palestine, from this circumstance he changed his name to Lockheart, as it was formerly spelled, and took for his arms a human heart proper, within a padlock sable, and for a motto, " Corda serata pando," which signifies "Lay open the locked hearts."
