Last Name JORDAN

Summary/Contribute

Meaning The son of Jordan. This great first name, that has made such a strong impression on English and West European nomenclature, received its impetus, like Ellis (Elles), John, and Baptist, from the Crusades. Flasks of Jordan water were brought home to be used for fontal purposes. John the Baptist was the second Elias, and the baptizer of Jesus Christ. Naturally Jordan was added to the list, and became popular throughout Western Europe. Every regster has its muster of instances of the names. Judd was the nickname (whence Judd, Judde, and Judson), and Judkin the diminutive after the prevailing fashion that gave us Watkin, or Wilkin, or Simpkin, or Tompkin (whence Judkin toned down to Juckins, Juggins, Juckes, and Jukes).
The river of judgment. 'Jardain,' Gaelic, the western river, with respect to the Euphrates. The name is derived from its two spring-heads, 'Jor' and 'Dan.'
Origin English, Hebrew, Jewish, Spanish, French, Norwegian, Polish, Chilean, Irish, Slovenian, Croatian, Romanian, Falkland, Austrian, Belgian, South african, Hungarian
