Last Name FORTY

Summary/Contribute

Meaning Local: At the forth-ey, i.e. the islet in the ford- or forth- hey, an enclosure by the ford. It has nothing to do with numerals. The original bearer of the name dwelt on some little island or holm in a river or stream, or in an enclosure by the riverside. Forty is used by the Scotch poet Douglas in the sense of brave. Hence Forty and Fortyman probbaly refer to the courage of their original owners. This interpretation is quite besides the mark.
